The Crystal Ship Proposal
The Crystal Ship Proposal
‘Roots in Motion’ 🌱🎒.
I have chosen to use my personal experience as a starting point to address the concept of change.
I lived in Belgium for three years and recently returned to Colombia. One of the biggest challenges I faced was the feeling of not belonging completely to either place. I loved both lands, but found it difficult to put down roots in one. It was then that an idea was born in me: ‘rooting on the move’, finding a home in the suitcase, in the backpack that accompanies me.
Migration implies a constant coming and going, making decisions in the hope of building a better life. I am not an isolated case. In a world marked by strong migratory crises, I want to convey a message of hope: there is always an opportunity for change, for movement, for migration. Our suitcase can also be a symbol of construction and celebration.
The concept I want to capture in my work is the portrait of a migrant woman holding a backpack, from which sprouts a tree very common in Latin America: Ayer, Hoy y Mañana\\ Yesterday, today and Tomorrow (Brunfelsia pauciflora). This tree, with flowers that change colour throughout its cycle, represents transformation. Its roots emerge from the backpack, symbolising rootedness in movement.
I have chosen wall 2 because its geometric structure allows me to play with patterns, flowers, roots and typography, elements that interest me deeply.
We all have the opportunity to change. Belgium has been home for many, including me, and I want to pay homage to that experience.
